The English foreword to this book says,"Japanese gilt leather or Kin-Karakawa is an original European craft,which was introduced to Japan in the Edo period(1603-1868)from the Netherlands.In Japan the leather was decorated with thin layers of gold or gold-colored materials.
In modern Japan,the technique is still used to produce a host of items including leather chairs,shields,cushions,handbags and wallets."
