The English foreword to this book says,"From ancient times we have used the term armor to denote a helmet and a body protector as a set.Armor as a type of arms used primarily for self-defense has been worn by various tribes from all over the world.In its material,form and function,however,it varies dramaticall,reflecting differences among cultures.Japanese armor is characterized not only by its functional utility,but also by its rich variety of decorative designs.
This exhibition consists of selevted masterpices of armor from the Kofun through Edo periods,with emphasis on the unique characteristics of Japanese armor."
